Being a fan of both Stephen King and George Romero, “Creepshow” has always been among my common anxiety flicks. Campy at times perhaps, but that’s the whole point – to bring a funny book feel to film. And it offers a perfect balance of humorous funny dread and helpful scare, making for a very exquisite viewing experience if one remembers not to assume it too seriously.

What you find is 5 mini stories, some of them better than others but all offering plenty of shocks and chills. It opens with “Father’s Day,” where a deceased victim of kill rises from the grave for a nice miniature Father’s Day surprise. One of the better ones. “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” follows, where Stephen King takes on the lead role as a hillbilly who finds a meteor with a nefarious habit of making green hair grow on, well, everything. This one is more humorous than scary but mild capable. King does a ample job as the clumsy and unintelligent-but-likeable Jordy Verrill. Next up is “Something to Tide You Over,” where a vengeful man (Leslie Nielsen) gets even on his cheating wife and her lover (Ted Danson) by burying them both in the sand and letting the tide grasp care of the rest. This is my second common of the bunch. It’s chilly to notice Nielsen select on the role of the “abominable guy” for a change. Goes to present his versatility as an actor. Ted Danson is spacious too. What follows is “The Crate,” in my view the best one. It’s also the longest one. Hal Holbrook plays a loser whose obnoxious wife gets what she deserves when he finds a mysterious blood-thirsty creature locked away in an primitive crate. This is the darkest and creepiest of the stories. Pure fun, with righteous acting from everyone. The final record, “They’re Creeping Up On You,” is the only one I’ve never liked. An eccentric millionare with a roach phobia objective can’t seem to regain rid of his dinky crawling friends no matter what he does. Anyone who doesn’t like roaches is advised to skip this one. The final scene will choose away your appetite for at least a few days.

Now that I’ve talked about the movie itself (easily 5 stars), I have to comment on this sorry excuse for a DVD (0 stars) . This has to be THE worst transfer ever establish on DVD. I traditional to assume it couldn’t gather any worse than the first edition single-disc transfer of “Scarface,” but I was depraved. “Creepshow” was set aside on DVD unprejudiced for the sake of putting it on DVD. NO CARE whatsoever was keep into presentation. As another reviewer has mentioned, the movie literally “jumps” throughout the entire time. Grain and those annoying “hairs” appear on the cloak almost every second. The VHS offers better narrate quality; that says a lot. The only bonus feature of this DVD is the trailer, which I content is wintry, but let’s gain valid. Another slap in the face is the scene selections. The inside of the DVD case advertises 41 scene selections in the “Scene Index” card, but that’s misleading, as the movie only has 21 genuine scene selections. So if you want to peep one specific scene, 9 times out of 10 you will need to acquire the *closest* scene to the one you want and extinguish up scanning forwards or backwards to fetch to the one you really want. Yet another example of a poorly thought-out DVD.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Creepshow! Click Here

Bottom line: “Creepshow” is a tall cult flick that deserves a Distinguished better DVD. If you have the VHS stick with that. Only secure this DVD if you no longer enjoy a VCR or absolutely must enjoy all of your movies on the DVD format. “Creepshow 2″ recently got a recent DVD edition that does it justice, so maybe there’s some hope that “Creepshow” will eventually score the same treatment someday. Until then, we must choose for this lackluster DVD.

How can i ever yelp my glee toward this 1982 film? From the first viewing i fell in treasure with the timeless terror classic. This particular entry into the genre is important for its uncannyand faithful tribute to the 1950’s panic comics (as distributed by EC Publishing), its funny charm, its extraordinary effects, and its cult creators (Stephen King and George Romero, and effects by fan fave Tom Savini) . Packed with five stories of the macabre this film is spin to please fans of fright as well as kids, adults, and most other moviegoers with its immortal style. The first memoir provides us with a sage regarding a cranky outmoded man that was murdered by his daughter on Father’s Day because she grew weary of his actions against her. Bright that you are watching a Romero/King flick only can reveal you of the fun to near from said position. The second fable of apprehension stars none other than Stephen King in what is perhaps alarm film’s most exquisite guest star role. King plays a simple hick who comes across a meteor which spreads its reign of fright around his home. King provides us with a truly memorable and quirky performance that is determined to remain in most people’s minds. The third yarn involves a cheating wife and the vengeance of her sullen husband on both she and her “other” man…naturally taking up on the EC tradition we can only seek information from the worse lesson for the wrath-ridden husband via supernatural means. The fourth anecdote is about a irregular crate that is discovered beneath the steps of a college stairwell. Within lie the mysterious contents of an Artic expedtion…that we all know will only wreak their havoc. The final creepout is slowly presented to us in the compose of an nefarious tycoon with nothing on his mind but money…and getting rid of filthy cockaroaches (or vice versa? ) . Each yarn is fantastically told and to top it all off we are provided with a wraparound memoir that introduces the whole chi-bang. This is what fun is all about. No need to pick this serious impartial gaze it for the enjoyability factor and you won’t be disappointed. Fans will also gather, noteworthy to their pleasure, a wide array of bedazzling special effects, oddball lighting, fresh characters, and overall trustworthy direction and storytelling. A positive addition to any sane person’s video library. The dvd version is creepshow at its best. Presented in the best color, record, and sound ever, don’t fret video buyers because the dvd sports nothing extra that you might be missing. Regardless of the lack of extra features this dvd is a no miss. Choose it

The Facets DVD of Un Chien Andalou is a disgrace. The frame was severly cropped at the top (some scenes feature actors lopped off at their foreheads) . Dissimilarity was boosted to the point where necessary detail is lost. As if this weren’t enough, there is a wide hideous glitch running horizontally across the camouflage that lasts for 5 or so frames. Despite the interviews with Bunuel’s son which are the only things worth the time here, I would avoid this disc. The film itself I judge is mammoth. It’s a shame that a staple of art cinema has been handled so poorly for DVD.

Luis Bunuel made his directorial debut with 1929’s “Un Chien Andalou” — a 17 small short film. The film was made in collaboration with the tremendous surrealistic artist, Salvador Dali; this pairing was repeated for the 1930 masterpiece “L’Age D’Or.” Viewing the first tentative steps of two giants is obviously provocative, which is enough to recommend “Un Chien Andalou.”

As with other big surrealistic films, the region, such as it is, does not originate any sense. Of course, themes can be derived from the work, although surrealism essentially is meant to be non-thematic. Some of the images from “Un Chien Andalou” are frightening and justifiably notorious — most notably a scene depicting a straight razor slicing into a woman’s eyeball. Yes, these scenes are somewhat disgusting but also wonderful for a film over 75 years frail.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Un Chien Andalou! Click Here

The film has not been updated or cleaned up at all, so the DVD image is somewhat unlit. Bunuel added a music track in 1960 to what was originally a still film; the regain works beautifully. The DVD extras include an interview with Bunuel’s son in which he discusses “Un Chien Andalou” as well as his father’s rather tumultuous relationship with Dali. An audio commentary by Spanish surrealism expert Stephen Barber is also included; unfortunately, this track is stunning mighty unlistenable as Barber drones on about the history of surrealism in a deadly insensible manner. Skip the audio commentary and objective bask in Bunuel’s work as is.

For those crying for the “Godfather Saga”/”Godfather Legend” versions, you are missing the point. Restoration expert Robert Harris (and countless others) worked for over a year from the best available print materials (as the novel negatives are badly damaged and customary) to restore the first and second films to their recent theatrical glory, which is something these iconic films of American Cinema deserve. That is the point of restoration.

If you are looking for a “wow” disc to display off your Blu-ray home theater sound and video, this is not it. If you are looking to experience fresh American Gangster cinema in its 1970’s glory, this is as cessation as you are ever likely to bag, muted sepia-esque color, film grain and all.

These were not done exclusively for the home market. The priority was that they were restored for theatres, because that is where they would be judged the most critically, and all indications are that they do not disappoint. Never contemplate these films in your living room with the lights on. Explore them like you do in the theater, lights out, to delight in the worry that went into these films.

NOTE: Opinions vary but MY review is designed to succor those who haven’t purchased the product choose whether or not they want to. If you disagree, write a review–the comments piece IS for that but not the voting system.

A advantageous restoration job, “The Godfather-The Coppola Restoration Gif Dwelling” includes all three new films as they were presented theatrical. It doesn’t have the version that Coppola prick for TV and presented in chronological order. THe first two films are masterpieces and while the third is severely flawed, it does have its moments.

Keep in mind that these were restored for theatrical showings NOT for the home video market and, as such, these probably aren’t the best Blu-rays to exercise to reveal off your home video system. Some people will no doubt be disappointed but, quite frankly, these films have never looked this worthy before on home video. Is this a substantial step up from the DVDs? Yes and no. The Blu-ray does provide better resolution but support in mind it also shows the flaws inherent in the current films (and some people will regard the grainy images as being a flaw) .

First withhold in mind that “The Godfather” was meant to survey grainy so those of you who disfavor grain will probably wonder why they didn’t eliminate it. That’s because to do so would have required altering the view of the film not restoring it and the usual result of eliminating film grain is that you lose detail. The result also makes it scrutinize like the actors are walking wax dummies. Some scenes are worthy grainer than others but that’s the draw the film was meant to glimpse.

According to Harris in an article at American Cinematographer, the fresh film was in extremely poor shape and, in some instances, frames from outtakes had to be subsituted because afflict had crept into the frame site of the film.

“The Godfather Fragment II” was in better shape for a variety of reasons and didn’t require quite as grand work on it as the first film.

“The Godfather Share III” since it customary different development techniques from the first three (and for other reasons you can read at the American Cinematographer website) and only required Harris to match the sad levels and acquire positive the color device was done correctly.

Robert Harris has done a first-rate job on the restoration of the film. Colors are bolder than before with nice crisp images as cinematographer Gordon Willis originally shot the film. While the DVD looks terrific, the Blu-ray looks positively glorious. Does it contemplate like a film released last year? No, of course not that would be impossible but Harris working with Coppola and Willis has brought the film into the 21st century without overprocessing the image (like the fresh Blu-ray “Patton”) and staying legal to the modern glance of the unique film elements if they were in pristine condition.

All of the previous extras from the boxed station have been ported over in HD along with some modern extras including “The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn’t” documenting the difficult birth of the film from Paramount asking Puzo to initially change the period setting to 1970’s Los Angeles to the constant threat of Coppola being fired during the shooting of the film. “When the Shooting Stops” covers the post-production efforts of editing and scoring the film.

THe silly “Godfather World” has distinguished directors illustrated the cultural impact of the film and features bits and pieces from “The Simpsons” to “South Park”.”Emulsion Rescue documents Robert Harris’ restoration efforts of the aging film elements. “Four Short FIlms of “The Godfather” is funny as well.

The 12 page booklet included with the Blu-ray was clearly designed for the DVD because it’s worthy too enormous to fit in the Blu-ray holder (it’s glued to the outside packaging) . It’s peculiar to invent the booklet like this as you’ll have to either spruce it down to fit inside, walk it in where it might possible become creased or store it separately to prevent wear and paddle. It has a bit of info on the Oscars for the films and the credits. It’s an curious extra to include because it doesn’t have anything truly notable NOT included on the Blu-ray or DVD boxed residence.

I’d highly recommend this compelling saga on Blu-ray and DVD. It’s a mammoth improvement on the previous dwelling, has novel and previously released extras (including Coppola’s often blunt commentary tracks) and looks terrific. For those looking for the TV version that ran in chronological order unbiased be aware it’s not here as fraction of this place although many of the deleted scenes aged to assemble that one are included.

One thing you can say about Sam Goldwyn’s ventures into musicals. He could either hit them out of the park (“Whoopee”, “Palmy Days”, “The Kid From Spain”, etc.), he could miss completely (“One Handsome Night”), or he could near up with a film that really is a bit of a mess but delightful for the classic film lover. The scrape here seems to be that the film is trying to imitate to some degree the Warner Busby Berkeley films of 1933, the dilemma being that it is five years later. You’d believe that of all people Goldwyn would have gotten that, since Busby Berkeley was directing his dance numbers in his Eddie Cantor films before Warner Bros. got a possess of him. Kenny Baker is obviously trying to stand in for Dick Powell, and he’s generous enough, it’s impartial that musicals were transitioning to a different phase by 1938, the year this film was released. Thus the backstage banter between chorus girls doesn’t near off very well after the code. The Ritz Bros. are obviously trying to stand in for the Marx Bros. and they do have a laughable routine about a cat, but in the kill they do pick up a bit wearisome. The film does have the dashing Adolphe Menjou, and he improves unbiased about every film he’s in including this one. The Technicolor is dazzling and the Gershwin music is astounding.

However, the fresh viewer has one strategic advantage over the viewer that saw this in the first-run. We’re not trapped in the perspective of a 1938 movie-goer so we can delight in the film for what it is – some gargantuan musical numbers with a small respectable comedy and a lot of silliness.

One thing I don’t gather. This film first appeared on DVD as section of the giant Hollywood Musicals Collection slow in 2008. One of the other films making its debut on DVD was the long awaited “Whoopee” starring Eddie Cantor. Why is this film debuting as a solo and not “Whoopee”? Is MGM allergic to money or something? I’m hoping that the reason is that they intend to release a state of Eddie Cantor’s musicals together in the very arrive future but I tend to occupy that the studio is allowing political correctness to trump sound fiscal policy even in these slim economic times.

I was overjoyed to study the modern DVD release. For the first time, this movie has been transferred to reveal how stout the upright Technicolor process was. There are subtle shades of color seldom seen in today’s color processes. As for the record itself, it is a mixed blessing with some vast musical numbers and righteous comedy routines. Some of it is “uninteresting” but preserve in mind that it is 1938. For a dyed-in-the-wool movie buff (like me), it is a right treat seeing Vera Zorina, Charlie McCarthy and the Ritz Brothers in their heyday.

but for the time beeing I’d conclude away from it, it kind of ruins the right fun the epic has.

In this colossal exiguous flick, “Author,” we swiftly are drawn into the mode as Author’s grandmother is about to lose her farm to developers and sees no befriend in peep since Grandpa has been missing for a long time.

Author listens to the stories that his grandmother reads to him, stories of adventures and slight people that his grandfather discovered and helped. Fantacy or truth? Author feels they are just and goes on a search to pick up clues as to where his grandfather has gone luminous he certainly must have left to earn the fancy of jewels that he knew his family would need.

It seems there is a land of little people living in Author’s garden, a people called the Minimoys and Arthur must allow himself to be shrunk to enter this world, attach his grandpa and bring the fancy home to set the farm. The adventure begins as we meet a quite charming and fiesty Princess, a grand King and a nation of adorable slight bitty people. As in any generous movie there is always the ‘evil one,’ as is the case here and we meet Maltazard who has been holding Grandpa captive and is planning to waste the petite people. Can Arthur assign the day?

This movie is cute a a button, going assist and forth from normal to attractive. It held all of our attention from the 8 year faded to the 60 year stale. It is fun, adventerous and has a blissful ending. I consider you will like this one.

The longest and most savage arc of the “Yu Yu Hakusho” series comes to an kill…. unprejudiced in time for our heroes to collect blindsided by a ticket novel threat to the world. Ah, fun.

In fact, the third season of “Yu Yu Hakusho” is fair worthy packed with entertainment. While the slay of the Gloomy Tournament Arc is all hardcore, bloody action and quite a bit of pathos, the legend that follows is even darker and more crooked — although thankfully peaceful tinged with a sense of humour. If only Yusuke’s final duel with Toguro hadn’t dragged out so long, this collection would have been ideal.

Kurama barely triumphs in his duel with Karasu, until a replay reveals that he lost the point anyway. So it falls to Hiei to fight the monstrously distinguished Bui with his newly retrained Dragon of the Darkness Flame, shattering the stadium and threatening to waste everyone around him. And Kuwabara goes up against the grotesque, unkillable Elder Toguro — who drives him into a rage with the revelation of Genkai’s death.

Then there’s the duel everyone’s been waiting for — Yusuke and Younger Toguro. And though Yusuke’s training has given him tremendous novel powers, he tranquil can’t beat his demonic opponent. But then a familiar philosophize tells Toguro the secret to unlocking Yusuke’s power — destroy one of his friends. And when Toguro seemingly murders a helpless Kuwabara, Yusuke’s rage and inconvenience cause his power to skyrocket — but will it be enough to defeat Toguro’s 100%?

Then there’s the aftermath of the battle. The team thinks relieve on the person they all miss, and in the Spirit World, Genkai has an encounter with Toguro — revealing his lawful motives.

But no sooner have the teammates returned home than Yusuke is kidnapped by a trio of teenage psychics, who are keeping him in the bizarre House of Four Dimensions. His friends undergo a series of trials to pick up to him, only to learn the correct purpose of this expend — someone is forming a broad tunnel to the demon plane, which could unleash tanker-sized demons in less than a month. Yusuke and friends must end the mastermind unhurried this — but they must also deal with a squad of extremely lethal psychics…

The ending of the Gloomy Tournament is a splendid solid one — lots of fiery sad dragons, dismemberment, Toguro’s injurious green muscles, and a stadium that finally collapses. It’s quite a credit that after dozens of fight scenes, this series detached manages to amp up the voltage for the final round of fights, and delivers a few monstrous twists along the diagram.

The tall problems: a distinct tedious character fails to end that intention, and Toguro and Yusuke’s battle is kind of anticlimactic after Hiei’s literally earthshattering duel and Kuwabara’s inspired attack on elder Toguro. Ah, well. You can’t have it all.

But things really heat up in the beginning of the next arc. It starts off on a rather lighthearted heed (“I’d rather not define to your teacher why I can sail”) ), but once the whole Tunnel-to-Demon-World site is revealed, things buy a darker turn. We’re treated to some truly gross fight scenes, such as that of the indignant doctor who uses his “territory” to poison hundreds of people at once. And it’s packed with secrets and mysteries, particularly about the recent unpleasant guy.

And fortunately the stories are detached liberally speckled with humor, including Kuwabara’s victory dance and Hiei’s plunge out of a tree (“What gruesome creature makes my ears bleed?!”) . But the most hilarious scene involves the tranquil, dignified Kurama screaming “BAAAAAAAAA!” leisurely a jealous classmate, and pulling a humorous face.

Yusuke has a lot of growth in this season, and not all of it is obedient — sometimes he seems deeply overconfident and rather infamous, but he also shows a vast deal of caring for his friends. And in one harrowing episode he is forced to end another human to place others, which is itsy-bitsy comfort to the young Spirit Detective. I’m not distinct why killing humans is any different from killing demons, though.

And Kurama gets to explain his intellect in a series of psychological games with a snotty psychic classmate, while Hiei turns out to have plenty of power and the “abandon” to expend it, but also an ill-used ego to match. And Kuwabara again proves that he’s a lot cleverer than he looks, giving Yusuke the final push to victory and helping charge through the House of Four Dimensions.

Poor Yusuke and friends. They never rep a smash of more than two or three days before another pain pops up like a toadstool. And the third season of “Yu Yu Hakusho” is definitely no exception.

This is in my plan the best fragment of the entire series as it is about the most action-packed piece, with Teams Urameshi and Toguro bringing in the final bouts of the Dismal Tournament, the entire Toguro team being Monstrously strong, and cunning versus the underdogs Team Urameshi who have yet to face such a ruthless enemy under such overwhelming odds, and both sides have a few tricks to unveil making for an inviting waste to a deadly competition.

All Mine To Give (1957)

A touching drama, All Mine To Give tells the black memoir of six pioneer children who struggle to conclude together on Christmas Day following the deaths of their parents. This classic Christmas romantic comedy stars Janet Leigh as a terrible young widow torn between a dull successful businessman and a romantic ne’er-do-well. Robert Mitchum and Wendell Corey co-star. I’m obvious you can figure out which actor plays which man. This movie is very old-fashioned and realistic. Nobody is all poor or all respectable in this film.

It Happened on 5th Avenue (1947)

This screwball comedy is about a hobo and friends who recede into a mansion while the owners are out of town for their Christmas holiday. The film was directed by Roy Del Ruth and stars Don DeFore and Ann Harding.

Blossoms in the Dust (1941)

Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon star in this upright epic of Edna Gladney, a woman who devoted her life to finding homes for unwanted infants. Felix Bressart co-stars. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy. This film is wonderful, but doesn’t stammer anywhere cessation to the factual fable of Edna Gladney. She didn’t need all of the family melodrama portrayed in the film to motivate her, and she was a staunch force in the care of children in Fort Worth,Tx. throughout her life.

Jack Lemmon is always a worthwhile gawk, and he plays his captain well. And Rick Nelson does a surprisingly effective job of acting, with subtle glances and gestures. Ever the unexcited and polite junior officer, you root for the kid with the heart of gold. If you are looking for another typical, VH-1 styled gape at the fun and excesses of a dysfunctional rock band, this complex film may disappoint you. Edgeplay is not a film intended to excite, perceive, or fawn over it’s subjects, and I say subjects rather than “subject” intentionally, as it’s a film about people, not about the rock ‘n roll lifestyle. There is no whimsy for the ecstatic free-sex and drugs of the 70’s, or any fanboy enthusiasm for The Runaways as a band.

What there is, is an insightful and compassionate examine at a tragic and yet stoic group of young women, who made history, without ever recieving any praise, who made immense music without ever selling many records, and who paid dearly in many ways for their now legendary position, with a marvelous section of their childhoods.

Edgeplay is a documentary about the all-girl hard-rock band The Runaways, who so distinguished like their tourmates The Ramones, state the next two decades on fire, without getting any of the credit or rewards.

Victory Tischler-Blue, the director, writer and concience of Edgeplay, endured a 6-year trial-by-fire getting this film made and released,(and is a chronicle as compelling as any in her movie), and I deem mighty of the raw honesty and poignance in this film is in some ways a insist result of that struggle.

There is an almost Dickensian cast of characters: A young, Joan Jett-Talented and driven, yet shocked and unsure of herself, Cherie Currie-A striking blonde, who never expected to be a singer, and yet, worthy like Lana Turner sitting at a soda fountain, was chosen to be one, Kim Fowley-A slimy Svengali who unashamedly preyed on very, young girls to invent himself rich, and makes no apology, Sandy West-A tomboyish, young drummer who simply loved playing her drums, and wanted no more than to exhaust her life doing it, Jackie Fox-A doe-eyed bassist who found out earler than the others that stardom could be an empty trophy cup, Lita Ford-Fiesty, tough, and driven, and Vicky Blue-The bassist who walked into this dysfunctional family in the midst of meltdown, and yet stayed on the outside enough, and more importantly, grew-up enough to perform this fantastic film.

I mediate Miss Blue, ex-band member and director of Edgeplay, knew something that Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With The Wind knew. Mrs. Mitchell once said about the theme of her modern, ” I often wondered why some people could rise above gigantic adversity, while others, unbiased as bold and shining, go under. All I know is that my daddy called that quality “gumption”. I wanted to write about people that had gumption, and those who didn’t”. Well whether intentional or not (though I quiz it was), that is exactly what Miss Tischler-blue has done here.

As most will know, Lita Ford and Joan Jett managed to speed the musical ghetto that was The Runaways, to earn tall success in the music business. The new bassist is now a successful attorney. Cheri Currie, although never achieving the same level of success, managed to secure work in Hollywood for many years, and has continued with a low-profile music and art career. Sandy West, however was plagued with trouble after her band dissolved, falling into desperately hard times, both financially, and otherwise, and considerable of this is explored unflinchingly in Edgeplay.

This film works on so many levels that I sometimes am awed by it. When you survey it the first time, you survey and hear the tale of a rock band. When you peek it a second time however, you initiate to become absorbed by the titanic differences in these women. All but one of the members, now in middle-age and 25 years away from The Runaways, level-headed carry deep emotional scars from their experiences, that seem to transcend anything that has happened to them since. All but one of them breaks down on camera in a scheme that’s agonizing to ogle. Is it really possible to carry resentment from teenaged slights and squabbles into middle age? Once the women originate talking to Miss Blue’s camera, you acquire out that you can indeed.

The only one who does not seem affected by her experiences so long ago is Lita Ford, who I found, quite unexpectedly, the most enchanting of all. After 4 decades or so of life, I like to believe I know fraudulent bravado when I discover it, and yet in Lita I saw none. It’s fantastic to inspect her face as she walks serve over the same aged paths as the others while recounting her experiences, and yet, to her, it was almost like describing a movie she had seen, and enjoyed, but could only partially remember; not because it wasn’t piquant, but because, well….it was only a movie. Lita ends-up being Edgeplay’s Scarlett O’Hara. The one who had gumption.

Of course Joan Jett became a star as well, but we’ll never know her thoughts and feelings on things, as she declined to participate in the film. As I understand it, she was violently opposed to the film, it apparently not focusing enough on her, and did everything in her power to crush the film before it could be released. This is utterly mystifying, as her treatment in the film is not-at-all negative, and if anything, she comes across as rather inoffensive and hard-working. Very irregular.

Edgeplay is, in many ways, the “Clockwork Orange” of rock documentaries. From the sunless, sadonic tales of excess and loss-of-innocence, to the startlingly effective and mopish camerawork, (which usually annoys me, but here served a sincere dramatic purpose for a change), this is a film that anyone can gain something out of, whether you’re a Runaways fan or not.

After posting a review of Edgeplay on another region, I was amazed and joyful to recive an email from the director of the film, thanking me for my helpful review, and expressing her relief that someone “got” what she was trying to do with Edgeplay. Yes Victory, because of your long go in making this poignant, affirming, yet disturbing documentary, we all got more than we could have hoped for. Don’t trouble. You did kindly.

Victory Tischler-Blue’s “Edgeplay” is a riveting, emotional, brutally unprejudiced film about what happens when a cruel, manipulative man pumps 6 teen girls tubby of dreams.

The Runaways were a groundbreaking rock group whose influence over the years belies their mediocre relate sales at the time. Somewhat manufactured in that none of the girls knew each other before being picked out by uber-scenester Kim Fowley, they calm managed to forge a raw identity of their believe while rebelling against his emotional abuse. Having been a 13 year stale in Los Angeles at the time of their first album release, I can personally attest to the dreams they inspired amongst their fans.

All the girls eager except Joan Jett co-operated fully in this documentary. The interviewer / director was one of The Runaways herself: Vicky Blue was the bass player who replaced Jackie Fox after Jackie left the band. Even Kari Chrome who never played onstage, but contributed songs to the first album & was instrumental in Kim’s initial conception of the band is interviewed.

Cherie Curry has previously written of her experiences in her autobiography “Neon Angel” but, judging from this documentary, left broad gaps in her book. All the dirt, all the distress, all the wound done to fragile teen egos is finally aired in “Edgeplay”. Cherie admits to sexual relationships both with other members of the band as well as a long-term one with “hands on” manager Scott Anderson which left her pregnant during their European tour. Her combustible relationship with Lita Ford (who spends most of her interviews either having to be reminded of recordings or glossing over her violent temper) led to Cherie’s departure from the band.

Jackie Fox (the first bass player) discusses the precise reason she abruptly left The Runaways in Tokyo at the peak of their fame. The revelation leaves her in tears, and the scars from the experience remain on her body to this day.

The most affecting interviewee is Sandy West, the drummer. As with most drummers, Sandy was never an lustrous or prone to analyzing situations. She honest wanted to play drums & have a honorable time. Greedy, manipulative power plays took her life away from her & the final scene is of her tear-streaked face wondering why the new members can’t reunite & represent together again. It’s a wrenching scene that illustrates vividly the injure done to these young girls.

Ms. Tischler-Blue also interviews both Sandy & Cherie’s mother’s which provides an respectable background on how Kim Fowley was able to abuse these young women so freely. Kim himself spends his interview time blustering & dodging questions, never coming finish to admitting the wreckage he made of these 7 lives.

The extras aren’t noteworthy, but do provide some additional background to “Edgeplay”. There is a Video Gallery, which consists of some of the background footage former with more of Kim Fowley’s bluster playing over it. The only other extras are 3 different promotional trailers. Interestingly, worthy of the promotional footage was not actually ancient in “Edgeplay”. The final one, called “Edge-Tap” is hilarious, and a distinguished needed antidote to the raw emotional footage of the film.

Absolutely recommended to anyone who wants to observe what really goes on in the rock world. With the new mania for tarting up young teen girls & displaying them as sexual objects on MTV, “Edgeplay” is amazingly relevant to today’s music business. Gain this DVD!
