Since the airing of the pilot, both critics and audiences have been blown away by My Name is Earl. Besides a extremely talented cast whose comedic chops are perfectly timed, Earl has a solid cast of writers who make 22-minutes of laugh out loud comedy every week. Earl’s guest stars in Season 1 rival only Scrubs, including Giovanni Ribisi, Johnny Galecki, Beau Bridges, Jon Favreau, Adam Goldberg, Christine Taylor, and Juliette Lewis.
Season 1 of My Name is Earl offered 24 solid episodes, including the pilot, and received the Director’s Guild Award and the People’s Choice Award for Best Modern Comedy, and was nominated for a half dozen other awards including 2 Golden Globes. This would be a 5-star indicate but it remains to be seen if the writers and producers can hold this level of energy up for several more seasons. As First Seasons go though, this is one of the best to near along since Scrubs.

If you’ve read the last 14 reviews, you already know the premise and myth of the reveal. Here’s what you won’t read from anyone else: Under this show’s veneer of blue collar humor lies a deeply spiritual and optimistic move. The prove is comedy in the classical sense–characters in a uncouth area are raised up in the raze by a series of events–but it is mainly about repentence, restitution and redemption. Earl decides to change his life for the better and stops doing the awful things he did before (repentence), he goes about seeking forgiveness from the people he has wronged and tries to restore what he has taken from them (restitution) and in the raze he and the wronged people are better off for it (redemption) . I gain the writers chose well in using the conception of instant karma as the vehicle–the driving force Earl has faith in–because that is a universal conception that all religions can identify and respect. Also, I fancy how intelligently subtle the change in Earl is portrayed. In every episode you will peek a flashback of the “before” Earl along with “fresh” Earl; search for that there is no disagreement in clothing or hairstyle from before and after. The change is in his heart and behavior only, where it matters. TV writers usually smack you over the head with visual cues.
Anyone who has strived for spiritual improvement can readily identify with Earl. There are some aspects of that path that are easy and immediately rewarding, but that’s not always good. Sometimes you have to suffer the misunderstanding, mocking or rejection of your friends and/or relatives or difficult, unforgiving souls. Later epsiodes have their difficult moments and Earl has to acquire tight to his faith to collect through it. The most valuable of such situations is in the episode “Number One”, when Earl gives all his money to the man who was supposed to find it. He ends up losing everything except his faith, hungry and homeless, but is finally restored. Lynard Skynard’s “Simple Man” was the perfect music for that scene.
I am very glad to seek this reveal keep on DVD because NBC edited bits and pieces out when they reran the episodes to create more time for commercials. Some of those bits are significant to comedic timing and storyline chase. I highly recommend you accumulate this collection and try to belief the episodes through its spiritual prism.

I have to say that they nailed this movie gorgeous safe.
Basically all it does is vow the memoir of what happened in Mogadishu on October 3, 1993. They didn’t focus on character detail that grand which to me is a genuine thing. There are impartial too many people fervent to go into detail with them all. Going into too powerful detail on positive characters and not others would assume away what some did and would lessen their sacrifice. So, they stuck to impartial the epic. Estimable fade.
They compressed the record some, changed a few names, and merged some characters into one character This was done to regain the sage down to a movie time frame and to protect distinct characters identities as they are collected serving.

No movie based on a book is as detailed as the book. Don’t examine it to be. You should read the book as well.
Some critics have said that it is scheme too violent of a film. Did they know they were going to study a movie about combat? Hello!!?!! It’s about time that film makers have started making movies to prove the American public what really happens in combat. Combat is not one guy running around killing people by the hundreds with a head band on. They made it a steady as you could salvage it on the hide. Saving Private Ryan started it off and now Sad Hawk Down. To Jerry Bruckheimer and Ridley Scott, Bravo! Well Done!
It’s very good as far as weapons, equipment, uniforms, etc. They faded the real helicopters that were archaic in the unusual mission in 1993 with the 160th Fly.

The whole movie I was searching for inaccuracies. Want to know what I came up with? They had their names written in marker on their Kevlar helmets (this was done so the audience could expeditiously dispute who’s who) we wrote our names on the helmet band. The chin straps on the Kevlar helmets were not taped up (As soon as I got to Ranger Battalion we had to taped up and tie down positive pieces of equipment and this was one of them), they wore dog brand silencers (in Ranger Battalion I was told to come by them off and tape em up with 100 MPH tape as soon as I got there), and sometimes they said each others names on the radios instead of call signs (once again this was done for the audience) . So as you can witness I was really reaching there.
Certain shots were unbiased fabulous for me. For example, there was a point of understanding shot from the side of a MH-6 Slight Bird (we archaic to trek out on the sides of those things all the time) . The camera was positioned as to be a person sitting on the left side of the chopper looking to the front. In front of the chopper is another Runt Bird fully loaded with guys. The sequence is them going in for a landing on the street. Unprejudiced watching it reminded me of all those times I rode on those [...things].
Maybe someday people will initiate to view what people in combat arms go through.

This is a phenominal film. I’m dusky to say that I was fairly oblivious to the conflict in Somalia… I was working 3rd shift and sleeping during the day in 1993 when this incedent took site. This film could not have been more timely in its release… when long dormant patriotism has been brought to the forefront of every American’s thoughts.
Now that we’ve been attacked on our gain soil, conflicts overseas seem that powerful more sincere to us.
In 1993, the Islamic leader and warlord of Somalia, Muhammad Farrah Aidid, led with awe and tyranny. His henchmen were equipped with what appeared to be limitless weapons — enormous machine guns, shoulder rockets, pistols, and many automatic and semi-automatic weapons. They enlist even the youngest and most innocent of their populace to encourage them explore and retain in constant contact via cell phone. Aidid stopped international abet from reaching his believe people, killing 300,000 by starvation and the onslaught of civil war.
Washington sent in their military forces to prefer Aidid from power and to prevent the Somali people from having to endure more suffering under Aidid’s iron steal. Sadly, Washington didn’t want to “seek too dramatic” and denied military requests for C130 gun ships and other heavy artillery that certainly would have made a huge inequity on the outcome of this event.
Army Rangers, pilots, medics, the eminent Delta Force, the pride of America was there, fighting for the freedom of a people they did not know.
This film is the realistic portrayal of the events that led to the deaths of 19 U.S. servicemen… but it’s not unprejudiced a shoot ‘em up movie. You feel like you’re there, with them. What should have been a mission that was to last only 30 minutes, lasted longer than anyone imagined when a single Somali soldier downs a Dark Hawk rotor with a shoulder-launched rocket… and the Ranger motto, “no one gets left tedious,” is tested to the limits.
There are some funny moments to rupture the tension, but the majority of the film is a stressful experience where you are literally at the edge of your seat to spy what happens next.
The 19 servicemen that are killed range the gamut from 18 year primitive enlistees to First Sergeants with years of service… and none of them dies in a shapely arrangement. If you are made queasy by blood, beware… this is a bloody film… and there are a number of scenes that will acquire you gasp in fear. Some of these guys were hit by rockets… burned and blown apart… it’s honest abominable, but sadly… it’s reality. We usually unbiased hear some sterile figures on CNN how a particular number of soldiers were shot, stepped on land mines, etc… but we don’t view what really happened and that’s when we become very smooth from reality and kill up sympathizing with the people (often our enemies) we spy in easier-to-stomach scenes of children living in squalor as a result of conflict, maligning Americans against their absorb military. Please price the rating of this film and believe it thoughtfully before considering bringing a child. The gore is horrific and the scenes are really too intense for young ones.
For those who like shoot-em-ups and explosions, you won’t be disappointed. The special effects are extraordinary… there are a few scenes in the movie in which you feel like ducking as it appears a missile is ready to whiz legal over your shoulder. The sound is improbable… you can hear and feel the bullets whizzing by and you can hear the klinking of shells falling at your feet. The foley artists on this film are to be commended.
Hans Zimmer delivers a fantastic and complimentary obtain to the movie… along with the sounds of African children singing and some rock-n-roll to boot… it’s a nice soundtrack.
Ridley Scott reminds us once again his flair for delivering crisp, lustrous scenes that are riveting, spicy and spellbinding all at the same time.
Watching this film is an emotional and intense experience that will leave you tired when it’s over… but images from the camouflage will replay in your head several times. These soldiers trained hard to become Rangers and to be piece of the Delta Force… these are young men that know what dangers await them and they go in with their eyes wide commence… and they are prepared to defend their buddies with their lives. In many ways, this film is a monument to their strength, their courage and their loyalty. Those 19 men should not be forgotten. This film is also a testament to the necessity of properly arming and equipping our soldiers so that they have the best protection needed when engaged in conflict and worrying less about appearances and more about protecting American lives, both military and civilian.
I highly recommend this film.

Between 1999 and 2003, the original sci-fi television series “Farscape” was aired on the Sci-Fi Channel in the U.S. Filmed in Australia primarily by Jim Henson Productions with assistance from several Australian production companies and some funding from the Sci-Fi Channel, the series developed a strong following and was under contract for a total of five seasons. However, various funding & political issues forced the premature cancellation of the display following the fourth season (a total of 88 episodes), noteworthy to the fear of sincere fans who (for the most share, including myself) were greatly disappointed by the inconclusive events left in the final minutes of the final fourth-season episode.

However, under the leadership of Jim Henson’s (1936-1990) son, Brian Henson (Jim Henson Productions’ president & CEO), Jim Henson Productions was able to rep fat control over “Farscape”, allowing it to get a four-hour mini-series in 2004 to provide a better closure for the existing four seasons than the final events of the final fourth-season episode. Entitled “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars”, the four-hour mini-series was ostensibly equivalent to what the planned fifth season would have been, albeit mighty shorter, but in no device less fantastic or spellbinding as the current 88 episodes. On the contrary, thanks to Brian Henson’s efforts (which included directing the mini-series himself), “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars” was a fabulous, inviting and great conclusion for one of the best sci-fi television series that has ever been produced.
Seamlessly beginning where the final fourth-season episode ended, all of the cast members from the final fourth season returned in “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars”. This includes the no-nonsense Earth astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder), his fiancée Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun (Claudia Shaded), Ka D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Chiana (Gigi Edgley), Rygel XVI (declare of Jonathan Hardy), ‘Pilot’ (recount of Lani John Tupu), Scorpius/Harvey (Wayne Pygram), Sikozu Shanu (Raelee Hill), Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis (Tammy McIntosh), Stark (Paul Goddard), Utu-Noranti Pralatong (Melissa Jaffer), Skarin Emperor Staleek (Duncan Young), Skarin War Minister Akhna (Francesca Buller), Peacekeeper Commandant Mele-on-Grayza (Rebecca Riggs), Peacekeeper Captain Meeklo Braca (David Franklin), Ka D’Argo’s son Jothee (Nathaniel Dean) and wormhole alien dubbed ‘Einstein’ (John Bach) .

With magnificent special effects, capable direction, an involving & consistent area and friendly acting, I rate “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars” with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars and very highly recommend it to all “Farscape” fans. Some of the many memorable scenes in “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars” include Rygel’s efforts to benefit restore John & Aeryn and the subsequent consequences, the various battle scenes both in area and on the ground, John’s solution to war, and the birth. Many thanks go to Brian Henson and the many astounding actors and film crew that brought “Farscape” befriend to life. On a side heed, Ben Browder has received four Saturn Award nominations from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Panic Films, of which he won one in 2002 for “Best Actor in a Television Series”.
We all know the drill. JC, astronaut, is shot through a wormhole and joins up with a crew of a ship, a living ship, as they blast through site one season at a time. Along the plot they rush into multiple baddies, slay a wide array of bases, depositories, and even a few civilizations, and they also become something of a family. Sometimes that makes for humor, sometimes for seasons of sadness, and sometimes for thrilling adventure.
Such is Farscape.
For those who don’t know about the series all that well, it is one of the few I’d tout as a complete product that can’t be hyped enough. Following the exploits of John C. and the crew was a thrilling whirlwind to purchase allotment in because it evoked so many emotions and rewarded you, the viewer, for riding shotgun through the wormhole. You saw the transitions from character introduction plots and awkward travels to the becoming of crew labelled with words like “notoriety,” “infamy,” and a message filled with the hope for a better tomorrow. You even had the “tiny things” handed to you, from references to brushing teeth and how alien lifeforms could communicate, and you got it all with an Earth twist. Personally I’ve never pulled for “the fine guy” before, not really one to touch immoral with the cliche characters in most shows, but the crew of Moya was different. They actually touched me with their plights and the ways they could always turn a abominable site into something worse and quiet advance out alive, and I found myself addicted to it by the demolish of Season Two. That all seemed to near to an abrupt destroy when the budge was pulled on the series, though, and many people weren’t jubilant with the cliffhanger ending. So, amidst a flurry of enlighten and the knowledge that Farscape sells, the Peacekeeper Wars was born.
Vaguely commenting, the storyline picks lawful up where we left off, taking into consideration a few things I didn’t mediate of and setting off a war that everyone watching knew was going to arrive. You could smell it brewing, the Scarrans threatening too many people and Scorpius standing too conclude to that kill, and when it falls it falls beautifully. I was actually taken by all the digital savor the series was shown in this miniseries, shrinking in a procedure by the amount of currency I saw circulating in those magnificent ship battles, and I loved it. Added to this is the continuation of the myth of the main characters, with even Rygel getting a exiguous news of home and the promise of things to advance. And those these comments have to be vague, I can say with certainty that the storyline flowed and wasn’t forced. If you liked the series, you’ll fancy the taste of this brew as well, with all its emotional kicks in tow.
One other thing to sign in all of this is that EVERYONE was aid and taking share in this yarn allotment. I’m not talking about the crew and the main biggies, either, but I’m instead filtering through the “runt guys” and happily noting their faces. Bracca, possibly one of my favorites, is joined by an array of people that recall share in the series, again rewarding people that were perhaps wondering where they’d all gone. By and gargantuan, it is a complete area of faces to care for (and without that “guest situation” taste) .
So, in a nutshell, assume this BUT ONLY if you’ve kept up with the series. If not, it would be akin to reading the final chapter in a book and trying to taste the textures. To those who wanted it, though, it has reach and it felt estimable to have more. By the frelling gods, I’m serene pumped up from seeing it.

The method the US release of Crest of the Stars goes always makes the last episode of each volume the open of a modern arc. Lamirh and Ghint’s finish at the Barony of Febdaush is concluded and the focus is shifting towards the brewing war against the Abh Humanoid Reich and the 4 Nation Alliance. The empire has sent two of its best fleets, commanded by the wild Spaurh and great Traif to defend the Kingdom of Sphagnouf. This volume ends before the conflict at Sphagnouf is resolved, continuing the trend to “wreck arcs” so to thunder. The battle scenes in the volume are all very well directed and the plot’s ride starts to run. Once again, I recommend this series to all area opera maniacs and sci-fi fans.
The sage begins to fade faster once Lafiel and Jinto (mostly Lafiel) conclude dealing with the Baron of Febdash. War becomes a grand greater focus and we watch as yet even more of the differences in thinking between the Abh and human races, as presented by the different ways Lafiel and Jinto come things.
This disc contains three episodes. Episode 8 wraps up the Febdash storyline, while episode 9 and 10 deal with the pair ending up on a enemy occupied planet. As if the physical aspects of being on a planet weren’t enough of a challenge to the space-born and bred Lafiel, having to assimilate and conceal in human culture presents problems that she cannot even originate to anticipate.
This is where Jinto finally gets his time in the sun as he is now the one in familiar surroundings and no longer unnerved by uncertainty. The fable further develops the relationship between the two.

One thing I like about this fable is the issues and situations that the myth attempts to deal with. As distinguished as possible, they have tried to do characters and people react in a realistic diagram. There are parallels between the surrender of Jinto’s home planet to the Abh with Japan’s surrender to the allies, the occupation of Sufugnoff with World War II occupation of cities by various forces. The world is rich, believable and all too compelling. I am eagerly awaiting the fourth disc in this series.

This video is elegant gracious as Barney goes. I derive I like it better than the indicate. One of the songs is about using your “inside stutter” in the car or at school, and your “outside reveal” when you’re playing outside. It’s very cute. I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed re-watching it with the commentary by Professor Brian Cox, the scientific consultant for the movie.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Sunshine! Click Here
Those reviewers who are stating that the science is abominable (or even “ridiculous”) may not have listened to this commentary. There are some errors, which Cox points out, but the overall plan is not impossible, or even so farfetched as to be ‘virtually impossible’.
Professor Cox is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Particle Physics at the University of Manchester who also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva. In his commentary he mentions discussing with other scientists at CERN about the Q-ball hypotheses and relevance to sun-dying and restarting in the movie. (Incidentally, he seems to maintain the existence these super-symetrical (or super-stable) objects will be proven (by CERN) within the next 10 years or so.) His problems with science in the movie tend to be some of the smaller issues (for example – the craft orbiting Mercury a few times, rather than fair a ’sling-shot’ exhaust) .
Buy,Download, Or Stream Sunshine! Click Here
His statement on what the penultimate scene means to him (even if it only occurs in a ‘billionth of a second’, or in ‘the mind’) is extraordinary, and really impressed upon me the beauty, wonder, and apprehension many scientists fill for the universe. I judge some reviewers only saw this scene in a literal earth-based perception of time and were put-off by it. Again, it’s not necessarily meant to be seen that device. (And as mentioned earlier, Professor Cox’s comment on its magnificence is piquant.)
Another criticism reviewers have mentioned was why so many unstable people were picked for these missions. Again, I assume these reviewers may have missed something covered briefly in the film itself, and then more in depth in the commentaries. The people picked were stable and generally the very best in their field. Something with gravity, radiation, or another undefined characteristic of the sun caused mental problems . . . this was the reason the second mission included a psychologist, and the reason he was experimenting with the impact of sunlight exposure. I also believe the writer was using individuals to highlight various aspects of human nature, but that might honest be me.
All that being said, this is not a Star Wars type of film. If that is what you are looking for, you may well be disappointed. On the other hand, it is a bit less obscure in meaning and area than films like Solaris, and maybe even a bit easier to rob on the first viewing than 2001, and, for me at least, imparted noteworthy of the wonder and anxiety that those films did.
To anyone choosing to notice this film on DVD, I’d recommend watching it, and then watching it again (or at the very least, the last five minutes of it) with Cox’s commentary. In my idea his comments fabricate a really appetizing film even better.
Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.
Ground breaking director Danny Boyle has done it again with sci-fi action-adventure film “Sunshine.” It is something you have never seen before. The film takes plot in 2057. The sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. The Earth’s last hope lies in the hands of the crew on Icarus II. Attempting to flit to the sun and commence a massive nuclear weapon into it to ignite the fading star. Out of the radio contact with Earth, the mission begins to unravel and they pick up themselves fighting for their lives and the future of us all.
Fans of other Danny Boyle’s films will not be disappointed. His astounding films include; 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Transpotting, The Beach and Shallow Grave. The films delivers in every aspect. Unfortunately, the advertising campaign wasn’t very strong for this round of Danny Boyle’s film. And “Sunshine” only played in about 4000 screens. I luckily, found this on playing in a theatre advance me when it was released in July 2007 and fell in care for with it.
Overall “Sunshine” was a tremendous, large, sci-fi film that would be shown to anyone who enjoys a beneficial movie. I wish the advertising campaign would have been better because this is one film that should not be missed.
Film itself: *****
“Sunshine” uses a 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 which is a broad choice for the Fox Classic. This film has ample visuals, mainly scenes in outer region. Without giving too remarkable away, the last 20 minutes of the film are amazingly done and the visuals should be nominated for an Academy Award. The transfer to Blu-ray is very well done. When I saw it in the theatre, I was vexed about some of the segments of the film because they are darker and could cause the mask to be grainy. But Fox pulled through and did a immense job in transferring all the vast visuals that I saw in July onto my HD TV at home.
Video: *****
“Sunshine” uses English DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit) audio format. It is an wonderful choice and again, Fox pulled through. The audio on this film alone is Oscar respectable. The films soundtrack, soon to be released, is done by John Murphy in an wonderful device. Each scene in this film is memorable with the benefit to John Murphy’s soundtrack (OST) . The Blu-ray transfer is gargantuan. The disc also features French Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound which are a cramped disappointing but didn’t affect the overall outcome of the disc. I would have liked to peer the same DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 in the French and Spanish languages. But overall, the audio delivers past my expectations and I smooth thought on purchasing the “Sunshine” OST when it is released.
Audio: *****
“Sunshine” features a modern Profile, called Profile 1.1 which is newly released in 2008. The Profile 1.1 allows you to belief the film in PiP. The smaller veil being the director commentaries and the main cloak being the sincere movie. The PiP option allows you to switch befriend and forth between the screens without pausing the movie. Fortunately, Sony updated their PlayStation 3 to enable this option a few weeks ago. It works beyond imaginable and I really mediate that this will leave HD-DVD in the dust.
The Blu-ray disc also features an Audio commentary with the Director Danny Boyle which is above par. 21 Video Diaries, all with the Director Introduction. 12 Deleted Scenes and an alternate ending. Two short films: “Dad’s Dumb,” and “Mole Hills” which are mediocre. And the theatrical trailer.
The High Definition Uncommon recount on this disc are probably the best I have seen on a Blu-ray disc yet. The “Enhanced Viewing Mode” which in the picture-in-picture video commentary are well worth the Blu-ray disc win alone (Profile 1.1) . It also features a “Surround Sound Mixer” which you can select audio from the movie and listen to it by itself, or capture your approved parts and assign them together. A subtitle trivia track, which is loaded will tons and tons of information about the movie, production, and actors. And a search enlighten index. These are probably the best HD and extra conent features that I have seen on a Blu-ray disc and are well worth the notice.
Extras: *****
“Sunshine” is my celebrated movie of 2007 and could possibly be the best Blu-ray Disc of 2007/2008. I can’t enjoy all the High Definition impart on this disc and it is well worth the effect. Profile 1.1, also known as “Enhanced Viewing Mode” is a substantial addition to Blu-ray disc and I own this is what will bring Blu-ray out in the extinguish (also the fact that blu-ray has Disney) . I would highly recommend this Blu-ray disc to ANYONE who ones a Blu-ray disc player. A must rob. If I could rate this any higher I would.
Most underrated film of 2007. And potentially the best Blu-ray disc of 2008.

First, let’s fetch something straight: Belle de Jour was shot 35 years ago in France. It’s impartial not ever going to study as super, consuming, and saturated as a newer movie. Director Martin Scorsese (who spearheaded its re-release) is a purist; he would not want to artificially “enhance” the portray at the risk of distorting Luis Bunuel’s new vision.
Second, this DVD is non-anamorphic for very beneficial reason: Belle de Jour was photographed in 1.66:1 widescreen. 16:9 enhancement would actually have Slit OFF some of the report at the top and bottom. People who complain about the quality of this DVD simply don’t know what they’re talking about.
As for the movie itself, Belle de Jour is one of the few films about eroticism that really gets it lawful – it knows that eroticism is in the mind, not the body. The always shining Catherine Deneuve plays Severine – a woman whose life is at once picture-perfect and fundamentally empty. She is married to a superb provider, the heavenly but dumb Pierre (Jean Sorel), and enjoys all the slothful upper-middle class accouterments.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Belle de Jour! Click Here
But something is contemptible in this greeting-card perfect world. Severine seems to obtain erotic satisfaction only in the repressed desire to be humilated and mature sexually. She escapes into waking dreams where she enjoys being whipped, soiled with mud, and waddle to trees. This lurid fantasy life leads her to stare employment as a part-time prostitute – but only during the day, before her husband gets home.
Complications arise when her double life is discovered by her husband’s friend Henri Husson (Michel Piccoli), and when she finds herself the subject of a stalker – a dangerously obsessed customer named Marcel (Pierre Clementi), who also happens to be a violence-prone thief.
Though it sounds like fodder for a typical Hollywood “erotic thriller”, what develops from these elements is a psychological glance that, for all its depths, appears to remain moot about objective what makes the main character tick.

Central to the film is Deneuve’s work. Under Luis Bunuel’s accurate, disciplined direction, she delivers a performance that is cold, opaque, and ultimately heartbeaking. Yes, she seems distant, and that is precisely the point: the considerable talked-about ending, by its very ambiguity, shocks us with the revelation that we’ve been fooled all along. Severine is not unreadable because she is hiding black motivations. Rather, she is a dreamy, empty vessel; abused as a child (as we eye in subtle flashbacks), and acting out of nothing more than instincts she can neither hope, nor care to understand. The lights are on and nobody’s home.
Her last, cheerful smile as she enters one of the waking dream-states that pervade the film masks the hollowness of a human being squeezed dry of all her humanity by a life of denial, guilt, and empty materialism.
It’s an emotional sucker punch – a romantic banality that underscores with bitter irony what a dark, empty life Severine has, and the stout distress that has been done to her. The broad wound that her enjoy actions have caused by this point is unprejudiced a tragic ricochet.
All in all, Belle de Jour is a haunting part of classic cinema. It may be Bunuel’s masterpiece. It belongs in any serious movie fan’s collection.
“Belle de Jour” is generally considered to be director Luis Bunuel’s masterpiece; a surprisingly revealing and seemingly personal venture into the world of eroticism and its deviances. It’s a truly surrealistic consume in ambiguity, fantasy, and reality. The line that separates them is blurred so grand that the famously mysterious ending has had critics arguing for decades over its meaning.

The fantasy sequences are usually signalled by the sound of carriage bells, but by the extinguish of the film the viewer is no longer able to differentiate between what is another one of Severine’s fantasies and what is reality. Even Bunuel admitted to not bright himself. He said that “by the extinguish, the actual and imaginary fuse; for me they develop the same thing.”
The pretty Catherine Deneuve, ravishing in her frosty prime, portrays Severine Sevigny, the middle-class wife of Pierre, a doctor. She is frosty, virginal, yet seemingly gratified enough in her bourgeoisie life and its trappings. However, upon hearing about a local clandestine brothel from a friend, she pays a visit to the madame, and becomes a prostitute, going by the name of “Belle de Jour”, as she can only work in the afternoons. She apparently fully realizes and enjoys her sexuality, despite her guilty conscience, exclaiming that she “can’t support it”. She certainly doesn’t need the money. She’s bored with her life and her marriage, needing a “firm hand” to lead her; a need which the madame, Anais, who is obviously attracted to her, almost immediately recognizes. Her sweet and outmoded husband is unaware, treating her great like a child, and the audience cannot wait on but gain that even if he knew of her proper nature, he would not understand or empathize. She keeps her two worlds neatly separate until a patron of hers (whom she herself enjoys) becomes obsessed with her, and all is threatened.

That Alfred Hithcock in particular admired this film comes as no surprise to me; Deneuve would have been the perfect Hitchcock heroine: an cool blonde who becomes “a whore in the bedroom”, as Hitchock was fond of saying he preferred in his leading ladies. But this declare is not meant to simplfy the record, its telling, or Deneuve’s noteworthy performance, which is what truly draws the viewer into the film.
“Belle de Jour” was Bunuel’s first foray into the utilize of color, and he employed it to stout execute. From the plunge colors displayed in the landscape scenes, to the subtle shades in Deneuve’s clothing, the contrasts are site. While the world around her explodes in pleasing hues, Deneuve’s character is defined by her couture, if staid, wardrobe of tan, dim, and white.
“Belle de Jour” was unreleased for many years due to copyright problems, but finally re-released in 1995 through the efforts of director Martin Scorcese, and released on DVD in 2003. I’ve watched it twice in the past week and am smooth at a loss to recount it very well; suffice to say that I am in terror. It’s an amazingly erotic film without any explicitness, and one that I put a question to hasn’t lost any of its achieve over the years. As the subject matter is handled very tactfully and without any trusty sex scenes; a expansive deal is left to the viewer’s imagination – which only serves the heighten the mysteries inherent at every turn in the film. The viewer is however drawn into the sense of feeling to be a voyeur into Severine’s secret life; the careful choreography of scenes and camera angles contribute to the melancholy sense of intrusion by us, the viewers.
There are many sub-stories and tiny mysteries in the film; for instance one of the most widely debated upon by critics is the mystery of “what is in the Asian client’s microscopic box? ” that he presents first to one prostitute, who hasty refuses, then to Severine, who tentatively agrees. All the audience know is that it’s something with a insect-like noise, and when the client leaves, Severine is sprawled face-down upon the bed, the sheets thrown about, and obviously gratified with whatever took status in the interim.
“Belle de Jour” was awarded the Golden Lion at the 1967 Venice Film Festival, as well as the award for Best Foreign Film in 1968 from the Fresh York Film Critics Circle.
Interesting side notes: Bunuel himself had a shoe fetish, which helps interpret the numerous shots of Deneuve’s beautifully clad feet throughout the film, and the fact that every time she goes shopping, she buys shoes. He also appears in the film in a cameo as a cafe patron, and in another scene his hands are shown loading a gun.

What makes the film memorable is that it has the perfect blend of laugh outloud humor (“We’re a special combat unit with the United States Marine Corps and we’ve been tracking some Libyan terrorists. In fact I contemplate we’ve got ‘em trailed to a bagel shop around the corner.”) combined with some tender dramatic moments, that work together seamlessly.
The DVD is your typical standard DVD. No extras, other than the recent theatrical trailer. Happily the film is presented in Anamorphic Widescreen in its unique aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which looks stunning ample. A miniature sad in some spots, but not too distinguished to complain about.

A side-splitting comedy about four mental patients: Michael Keaton as a habitual liar who has violent tendencies, Christopher Lloyd as an obsessive-compulsive who thinks he runs the hospital, Peter Boyle as a conventional advertising executive with a messiah complex who likes to retract his clothes off, and Stephen Furst as catatonic couch potato. Against the wishes of the hospital administration, their compassionate doctor takes the four patients to Original York City to stare a major league baseball game. When the van reaches the city, the doctor has to exit the van – with patients level-headed inside – only to notice a slay committed by two rank cops. The doctor is attacked by the cops, leaving him hospitalized and unable to relieve his patients. The patients then come by themselves framed for the assassinate. Now the patients have to not only act “sane” to reveal their innocence, they also have to achieve the life of their doctor who is detached a target of the two cops.
What makes this movie work is the relationship of the patients. It is so mighty fun watching Keaton, Lloyd, and Boyle bicker all the time about the littlest things. Boyle has a really amusing scene in which he leaves the van while Lloyd tries to block him. Boyle then muscles his map past Lloyd, tells him that He shall have no spurious gods before Him, and finally he tells Lloyd to procure out his diagram before calling him a seven-letter word. There might only be so noteworthy you can do with a catatonic character, but Furst is quite memorable. Even though the doctor must have the patience of a saint when dealing with them, he probably has a harder time suppressing a laugh. Quite simply, this is a movie that gets better every time you inspect it.

Despite the media’s devastatingly misjudged reviews of VERONICA GUERIN the film is so exquisite that it will survive by word of mouth. Joel Schumacher understands this type of yarn – in this case a good stroy of an Irish reporter’s execute due to her indomitable fight to show the Drug Lords of Dublin. He makes us face the gross aspects of the drug underworld and its pitiful victims, yet he also knows how to harness the audience reaction to drive home a point. If anything this film is a stunning example, like TRAFFIC, of calling attention to a suitable international crisis – drugs with the associated greed of those perpetrating their employ and the devastating finish on our youth, our citizery, our cities, our future. Bravo to Joel Schumacher for his ongoing drive to perform the grimy things public.
But kudos are definitely in order for the entire cast of this film. Cate Blanchett in the title role has carefully studied the woman on whose life this is based and in doing so she is able to give a performance that is deeply felt, sensitively portrayed, and a complete pleasure to sight AND hear! The cast supporting her includes such sparkling talents as Brenda Fricker, Ciaran Hinds, Gerard McSorley and even Colin Farrell in a runt cameo role. Farrell’s appearance, despite its brevity, has a solid impact and seems more than an homage to Joel Schumacher who gave his his first major role in TIGERLAND.
The cinematography captures Dublin and the countryside of Ireland in all its rainy, grimy beauty and the musical gain is hauntingly appropriate. As the public responds en masse to the funeral procession of Veronica Guerin there is a sense of the Argentinian response to the death of Evita Peron – a country paying tribute to a heroine. Give this film a chance, tells your friends to spy it – the message and quality of VERONICA GUERIN is that capable.
A very realistic and, from what I have read of her life and execute, an extremely moral to life movie. Parts of it are quite violent but then that is portion of the realism. Parts of the movie are also very poignant, focusing our minds on the tragedy of the abolish of this blooming journalist. Cate Blanchett’s Irish accent almost had me thinking she was Irish.

Although this film has been trashed by the media, it is not as unpleasant as some will say, it does have some spicy characters, In this Stallone is a outmoded CIA explosives expert who is hired by Stone to secretly raze off the mobsters who killed her parents when she was a child, James Woods is at his usual best here as Stallone’s ragged CIA partner who is in cahoots with these mobsters, you can declare Woods had fun here in this role, Eric Roberts is chilling here as one of the mobsters who Stone is wanting killed, this movie gives noteworthy depth to its stars, Stallone, Stone, & Woods are NOT one-dimentional as some would say, we feel Stone’s madden & sorrow for her parents, & we understand Stallone’s unruffled & collective demeanor as he follows Stone in an misfortune to understand her intensions as any passe CIA agent might do, & we understand Woods’ intent, although not action-packed to the coarse, it was never meant to be,but does have huge explosions, the hotel room explosion has to be seen to be believed, region in Miami, the scenery is nice to view at, as is Stone who doesn’t leer as valid now, but this film is sterling if you want character substance, but if you are looking for non-stop action, you will be disappointed!!
It was the worst until I saw Batman and Robin. I believe this screenplay was submitted as some kind of sick joke. The dialogue is ridiculous, and the area simply did not exist.
Maybe it is supposed to be ironic?
