Director/writer John Hughes is one of those Hollywood success stories who has left in his wake a heap of approved and often spellbinding films, leaving an indelible imprint on motion characterize history. He may not have won a ton of awards, but the regular folks (as opposed to film snobs) esteem his work and have made him a very wealthy man. A list of his better known films would have to commence with “Home Alone” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and would continue with “The Breakfast Club,” “Attractive in Pink,” “Planes, Trains, & Automobiles,” and “Sixteen Candles,” as well as many others.

This particular John Hughes film stars John Candy as Uncle Buck, the kind of character Candy specialized in. He’s a middle-aged kid who can’t seem to gain a satisfactory reason to derive any responsibility in life. As he says in one scene, “People feeble to say to me, ‘Buck, you’ve got it made. You’ve got no kids, no wife, no office, no desk, no boss, nothing to tie you down. You’ve really got it made.’ Well, they don’t say that to me any more.”
Among Hughes’s “coming of age” pictures, this one is unusual. The coming of age is usually a teen or preteen. Here’s it’s Uncle Buck who is coming of age. His brother and sister-in-law have to leave town for a few days to tend his brother’s ailing father-in-law, and they are absolutely devoid of babysitters…except for Uncle Buck, the embarrassing relation they have chosen to avoid until now. Their three kids include 15-year-old Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly, now seen on TV’s “Yes, Dear,” in her film debut), 8-year-old Miles (Macaulay Culkin, his first major film role and the one that inspired Hughes to give him his next major role in a itsy-bitsy something called “Home Alone”), and 6-year-old Gaby Hoffman (shortly before she played the child lead in “Sleepless in Seattle”) .

You can practically write the film yourself from there, to a point. Buck has to be responsible for the kids, falls in treasure with them, is a far better (and remarkable, distinguished funnier) surrogate dad than anyone could have guessed, and by film’s kill things have all changed for the better. Obvious, it’s a limited too mighty of a ecstatic Hollywood ending to be factual (OK, scheme remarkable too mighty), but one doesn’t interrogate Shakespeare here, impartial sterling, solid, exciting comedy with a heart. That’s typical John Hughes, and since he gives us so many edifying laughs we forgive him if it doesn’t always completely ring moral. “Uncle Buck” may be underrated among Hughes’s films, but it’s well worth remembering.
John Candy has his BEST performance EVER in this film by John Hughes. “Uncle” Buck Russell (Candy) is a perpetual screw-up who HAS to win his act together enough to spy over his older brother’s three kids & dog, Tia, Miles, Maisy and puppy, Parsey since his sister-in-law’s father had a heart attack.

The cast includes Mac Culkin as Miles, Gaby Hoffman as Maisy, Amy Madigan as Buck’s girlfriend, Chanice Kobolowski, & Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne’s sister, Jackie) as the crazy neighbor lady, Marcie Dahlgren-Frost. Also billed in miniature parts are Anna Chlumsky (My Girl), Patricia Arquette, and Devon Odessa (My So-Called Life) .
This film is totally hilarious but also has those fantastic John Candy touching/sentimental moments.
A unbelievable family film that can be watched over and over again!

Other people rating this seem to downgrade it based on cussing. I don’t have a jam with cussing – this is in the tradition of Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and others – and it ranks up there with them. If you inquire something else, that’s your poor. This is some of the funniest stand-up I have ever seen, he had me crying. The man is hilarious, and needs to do out more of this type of off-the-chain material, instead of being all bottled-up on Malcolm and Eddie and Baby Daddy and stuff like that. I feel like this is the Trusty Eddie Griffin.
Also, this is called a documentary of him returning home, but that’s incorrect, it’s a stand-up exhibit with cuts of his family and hometown interspersed.

First I don’t know Why people derive offended by things said in stand up comedy bright that if it says on the aid of the dvd case rated R It’s gonna have some words that will offend people who have virgin ears. In Dysfunctional Family I have to salute Eddie Griffen because I truly did doubt his capability to design a descent stand up let alone a expansive one but he determined pulled it off. In Dysfunctional Family Eddie basically talks about his life and obviously his hard and capable times with his Dysfunktional Family. I was surprised how he even made jokes about the really hard times with his family and made them hilarious like having to live with his uncle for a bit and watching him do drugs, or when he first met his father when he was a teen. Some of these stories are cross but you beget them because his family is there the whole time talking and laughing about the stories. Eddie Griffen surely does have a current and Dysfunktional Family and I’m joyful he shared their stories. This is a gargantuan stand up every time I study this I’m laughing for the next few days trying to win theese jokes out of my system.

Mugen is a cocky, rebellious, bandy-legged fighter who incorporates break-dancing techniques into his unorthodox fighting style. Jin is more your typically tranquil and stoic samurai (or ronin, to be more right), steeped in martial tradition, who finds satisfaction in the perfect execution of his warrior craft. Mugen and Jin aren’t friends – in fact, they are contentious and want to test their skills against each other – yet they salvage themselves joining forces, thanks to Fuu, an insistent and kinda quirky waitress who inveigles the two into helping her search for the Samurai Who Smells Like Sunflowers. For 26 episodes, the discordant trio undergo many adventures, some serious, some hilarious, some objective dull out odd. The only constants are the bickerings amongst the three, the scrounging for food, and the intrusion of unusual day sensibilities. Oh, and the rampant butt kicking as done by Mugen and Jin.

On the heels of his favorite Cowboy Bebop anime series, Shinichiro Watanabe decided to assign a unique wander on the samurai anime with his irreverent, hip Samurai Shamploo. Shamploo means “lag fry” or a mix, and this is certainly what this series is about, as it fuses the frail samurai credo and decorum with the unexpected novel day incursions of hip hop attitudes, beatboxing, street tagging, and baseball. The episodes are supported by wintry Japanese hip hop music soundtracks and blazing hip hop scratches for scene segues. Watanabe also makes handsome utilize of visual metaphors, thereby adding more depth to the shenanigans. The ripping animation and dynamically constructed fight scenes are guaranteed not to disappoint.
Kudos, too, to the assert actors, especially Steven Jay Blum (aka Daniel Andrews, who also voiced Cowboy Bebop’s Spike) as the bestial Mugen. Kirk Thornton as Jin and Kari Wahlgren as Fuu are both gracious. The narrate actor for the sometimes series narrator Policeman Sakami Manzou (“the Saw”) is also very superior.

These episodes are definitely rated PG-13. This anime series doesn’t hesitate to throw in scenes of drug exercise and graphic violence. Some episodes even believe level-headed sexual scenes.
My well-liked episodes are “The Art of Altercation” (for the rapping samurai and his beatbox backup), the atmospheric “Cosmic Collisions” (where the trio fight the undead), the hilarious “Baseball Blues” (where the American pitcher couldn’t acquire the strike zone with the dog at bat, and he ends up inadvertently hitting the mutt – not to effort, no appealing dogs were afflict in the making of this anime), and the concluding 3-episode arc “Evanescent Encounter” (where Mugen and Jin are challenged to their very limits, choose their rivalry, and Fuu at last catches up to the Sunflower Samurai) .
Here are the 26 episodes (American titles first, with the modern Japanese titles in parenthesis) :
- “Tempestuous Temperaments” (“Storm and Stress”) Episode 1
- “Redeye Reprisal” (“Veritable Pandemonium”) Episode 2
- “Hellhounds for Hire” Parts One & Two (“Tacit Notion”) Episode 3-4
- “Artistic Anarchy” (“Affirm Indifference”) Episode 5
- “Stranger Searching” (“RedHeaded Foreigner”) Episode 6
- “A Perilous Racket” (“Surrounded on All Sides”) Episode 7
- “The Art of Altercation” (“Self-Conceit”) Episode 8
- “Beatbox Bandits” (“Rank Spirits”) Episode 9
- “Lethal Lunacy” (“Fighting Fire with Fire”) Episode 10
- “Gamblers and Gallantry” (“Fallen Angels”) Episode 11
- “The Disorder Diaries” (“Learning from the Past”) Episode 12
- “Misguided Miscreants” Parts One & Two (“Sad Night’s Road”) Episode 13-14
- “Bogus Booty” (“Through and Through”) Episode 15
- “Lullabies of the Lost” Verses One & Two (“Idling One’s Life Away”) Episode 16-17
- “War of the Words” (“Pen in One Hand, Sword in the Other”) Episode 18
- “Unholy Union” (“Karma and Retribution”) Episode 19
- “Elegy of Entrapment” Verses One & Two (“Beneficial Elegy”) Episode 20-21
- “Cosmic Collisions” (“Arouse Shot Toward Heaven”) Episode 22
- “Baseball Blues” (“Heart and Soul into the Ball”) Episode 23
- “Evanescent Encounter” Parts One – Three (“Circle of Transmigration”) Episode 24-26
It’s hard to remove “Samurai Champloo” too seriously. The series features a breakdancing samurai, hip-hop music, beatboxing and rapping.
But “Samurai Champloo” is a masterpiece in light comedy, action and even a compelling yarn consuming a daughter of a samurai who smells of sunflowers.
As the two samurai heroes say in episode two, there’s something funny about a samurai who smells of sunflowers. However, this series truly shows off some of the best battles ever seen in an anime, embellished with the fine environment of broken-down Japan. There’s a wide variety of stories, from a complex episode about a dying mother, an episode about the origins of Japanese manga and even an episode about a traveling geisha.
There’s fair one catch–the series is chock bulky of hip-hop references. Episode 8 alone is a goofy comedy tidbit about a samurai traveling the world with a beatboxing companion. Episode 16 features three samurai travelers rapping rumors they’ve heard on the road. Episode 18 gives us a closer eye at the unsafe life of taggers in old Japan.
Okay, maybe this isn’t the most realistic period allotment series ever made. However, this series has so powerful fun with blending hip-hop, Christian missionaries and samurai fighting together that one can’t resist loving this series.
It’s no surprise that this is one of the most accessible action anime series around. Director Shinichiro Watanabe, responsible for the worthy series “Cowboy Bebop,” has a flair for creating some of the slickest battle sequences ever made. His storylines might be more simplistic than, say, “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.” However, this is exactly why American audiences luxuriate in his anime series the most. They are simple stories of men who fight for something they care for.
There’s no better time to prefer the box state of “Samurai Champloo.” The box situation is $30 cheaper than the Geneon status, so anime fans have to gain this collection. Hands down, this is one of my absolute favorites.

Although anime is beginning to change people’s minds, far too many Westerners collected assume of animation as a genre only fit for children. The Last Unicorn ought to be high on the viewing list of anyone who believes animation is objective for kids–yes, it’s a “cartoon,” but it’s also beautifully sharp, with original and unforgettable characters, and the storyline is as good to the unique source material (book by Peter S. Beagle) as any movie adaptation I’ve ever seen.

In her unchanging, always-spring forest lives a unicorn (divulge of Mia Farrow), ageless, wise and innocent, and without regret–unicorns can feel sorrow, but it’s not the same thing. One day, when men approach into her forest to hunt, she discovers that she is the last of the unicorns. With snatches of relieve and hints from a dizzy butterfly, she sets out to gather the others. On her method she picks up an incompetent magician named Schmendrick (whisper of Alan Arkin), a withered woman named Molly Grue (impart of Tammy Grimes), and eventually finds the kingdom of King Haggard (order of Christopher Lee) and his son Lir (utter of Jeff Bridges) . But in the changing, aging world of humans, can the unicorn even sustain track of who she is and how the record should slay?
The movie version isn’t perfect. There are some awkward scenes, including a dreadful duet by Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridges which never should have been included, and some scenes occupy material such as peaceful profanity, bare breasts and depictions of death which might not be estimable for children. But there is an earnestness to this film, a magic in the diagram ideas are expressed, that’s all too rare in unique filmmaking. This quality helps many viewers overlook the film’s flaws.

So if The Last Unicorn is that edifying of a movie, why does it only rate two stars? Because the novel U.S. DVD release is unpleasant. This is a full-frame release, ***not widescreen***. The DVD has bad hide art and offers zero special features. The real transfer is grainy and blurry in spots, with no evidence of any kind of restoration work. The soundtrack has a distinctly tinny quality. In fact, the only reason one would retract this DVD was if one had only a single copy of the film taped off television some 15 years ago and watched over and over until the VHS tape nearly wore out… rather like me, in fact.
Don’t retract this DVD. I wouldn’t have done so if I had known what I know now. Instead, contact the distributors and request a fully-restored widescreen release in North America.
Let me open by saying that The Last Unicorn is my popular movie of all time. I have loved it since I was very, very young. However, I truly wish I had never bought this DVD.

First off, the movie is beefy cover and not widescreen–this could easily be forgiven if the DVD didn’t have numerous other problems. The characterize quality is dreadful and looks as though they ripped the movie from the extinct VHS master. There are also some scenes where the incompatibility seems to be up too high. I know that these are not simply issues with the recent movie because I have the German release and its recount is flawless (not to mention widescreen) and fair. This release also has one of the worst menus I have ever seen. The DVD says it has special features, but I can’t rep them!
If you’re a hardcore Last Unicorn fan, don’t prefer this DVD. Your aged VHS version is impartial as safe.

The first inning of this game is unexcited “lost” so the TV game broadcast starts with the second batter in the top of the second inning.
I’ll give the product 5 stars, but want to point out an error Amazon made in their description of the product that was distinguished to me.

First, I mediate the dwelling itself deserves 5 stars. I have watched two of the games (Larsen & Righetti) completely, and scanned through each of the others enough so I feel genuine to review the region as a whole. There are some video imperfections in each, but never enough to spoil the game for me. The 1956 video was actually better than I expected given other reviews. I have no serious complaints about any of the games, & agree with others who felt the Larsen game alone is worth the select.
Amazon indicated that the Righetti game was announced by Mel Allen, which is inaccurate. He appears nowhere on this disc, whose audio is from the radio broadcast that day. It was nice to hear Rizzuto, White & Messer again, but I was very disappointed Allen’s call from pay tv that day was not included. He does, of course, snarl half of Larsen’s game. That omission is probably of miniature importance to most, but I was looking forward to hearing him one more time.
So… Five stars for the residence, but none for Amazon for misleading me.

These episodes are all for the most piece enchanting and a lot of them are fan favorites. The stakes really rep raised as everyone on the planet is assign in immediate jeopardy soon after followed by the possible destruction of the planet earth itself. The final Kid Buu episodes are immense and derive the entire existence of life in the universe being threatened ratcheting everything up to it’s highest possible levels. The final episodes should be truly stunning for fans to rewatch or experience for their first time.
I’ve said before that I devour how these sets were made with an overall theme across the nine that line up well and peek beneficial together on a shelf. A well made booklet comes in each of these sets containing brief character bios and episode descriptions. The video is always well restored and in marvelous condition, presented as Widescreen 16:9 Aspect Ratio. The audio is gigantic with three different options:
American English Declare Track with American Music
American Suppose Track with the Current Japanese Music
Original Japanese Speak Track with the New Japanese Music.
The only extras on these sets have been trailer’s for other Funimation productions and textless opening theme and ending credits.
These episodes are not fair the final saga to the Dragon Ball Z series but also to the Dragon Ball series that began it all. The storylines here aren’t impartial bulky of the science fiction and hard hitting fights Dragon Ball Z was known for but also the elements of magic, fantasy and off beat humor that Dragon Ball was known for. Looking at these episodes now, they are the perfect ending to such an piquant series that artfully managed to constantly escalate things through a seemingly natural course of events. After these episodes it seems hard to imagine more legend storylines for these particular character’s than what we’re given here.
This final area is bulky with equal amounts of the fighting fans question as well as the elements of humor and fantasy that get this series so loved, fusing the two perfectly. Akira Toriyama ended his long running memoir fittingly and satisfactorily for fans with these sagas all ending with a final nod towards the Goku we were introduced to intention serve at the begin of Dragon Ball, a Goku that looks at everything as a challenge and adventure.
I can’t wait until this space is released in May, thanks for your time.

I aloof remember A couple years relieve, when I spent almost $50 dollars fair for the 5 DVD Location that only included the Kid Buu saga, Not only were the Extinct DVD’s expensive and almost impossible to score, there were also a total location waster. (It also helps that the size of the Site doesn’t assume up a lot of room like the Pervious 1999-2003 Sets.)
So, finally having the Comic Guys at FUNImations releasing very easy to regain Season Sets at $30 note range, earn me want to slap my self for even attempting to net over 80 DVD’s of DBZ.

Just rented it and had to observe it three times. An fabulous film! Where’s the DVD version! This simple grim chronicle a man wrongly imprisoned for robbery and the heart-breaking subsequent mental breakdown of his wife will haunt you. I would argue that this film demonstrates Hitchcock’s films in its purest make. No bird attacks or shriveled corpses here but then some of us who treasure Hitchcock’s works beget they are really in the slay about people and how they survive, or near to be trapped by, dire circumstances. Glance this movie along with “Vertigo,” “Psycho,” “The Birds,” and “Marnie.” Like “Psycho” and “The Birds,” we gape both physical and psychological imprisonment of the characters (or being caught in a kind of trap might be the relevant metaphor here) and like “Vertigo” and “Marnie,” we explore the overwhelming power of mental disturbance have on one’s ability to control one’s fill life. I have found that it always helps to compare Hitchcock’s films with each other as positive themes seem to occur over and over again, almost as if Hitchcock had some compusive fixation on it.
I would reflect this film a large tragedy.
This is definitely not your typical Hitchcock. Based on a genuine life case of erroneous identity, we really peek the cinematic magic that happens when a titillating tale is told by a director with uncanny instinct and depicted by actors with sizable scope and talent.

Fonda honest blew me away with his portrayal of Manny Balestrero, a Novel York City club musician wrongfully accused of armed robbery. His pithy and grounded performance really gave this film a realistic and poignant feel. You feel a sympathy towards his character as he is churned through the justice system, gutted out physically and emotionally, and ultimately ends up in jail.
Vera Miles’ portrayal of his wife Rose was a departure from what Hitchcock fans would demand…this is NOT the goody-goody gutsy sister of Janet Leigh in “Psycho”. Vera Miles performance is startling. We scrutinize her character tumble into mental instability as she places the blame of Manny’s incarceration on herself.

The cinematography, of course, is respectable. Here is where Hitchcock makes his signature on an otherwise laid-out record. The backdrop of NYC lends its gain gritty feel. All in all, this is a wonderfully rich film. It is an obliging inequity to Hitchcock’s more sophisticated, glossy films like Vertigo and Rear Window, and the acting is simply gracious.
A must for any Hitchcock fan.

Nadia Boulanger (1887-1997), universally called ‘Mademoiselle’ by her students, was easily the best-known teacher of composition in the last century. The list of her students from America includes, among many others, Aaron Copland, Walter Piston, Roy Harris and Leonard Bernstein. This documentary is the first film ever made by Bruno Monsaingeon, a obsolete musician who has gone on to become a leading classical music documentarian. It was shot in the 1960s and early 1970s in grainy sad & white and only average sound, when Boulanger was in her tedious 80s and aloof fearsomely in stammer of her abilities. This film remains one of the most distinguished documents concerning this fabled teacher. She is seen at one of her fabled ‘Wednesdays’, a composition lesson held weekly in her apartment for almost six decades and attended by anyone who would arrive. In this particular session she talks illuminatingly with students about a miniature share of Schumann’s ‘Davidsbündertanze.’ The incredibly talented prodigy, the Bulgarian pianist-composer Emile Naumoff, demonstrates at the piano; he looks to be no older than perhaps ten or twelve. Boulanger’s comments are terse, penetrating and forceful.
Buy,Download, Or Stream Nadia Boulanger – Mademoiselle! Click Here
Interweaved with the ‘Wednesday’ material are interview clips with Monsaingeon — expanded in his later book ‘Mademoiselle: Conversations with Nadia Boulanger’ — and, added in the unhurried 1970s, Monsaingeon interview footage with Leonard Bernstein (in French) and the eminent conductor/composer Igor Markevitch. An extra is a complete performance by the ORTF Philharmonic, with Markevitch on the podium, of Mozart’s Symphony No. 38, ‘Prague’.
There is an extensive booklet effect by Monsaingeon in which he details how the documentary came about and how he revised it some years later. (For reasons of rights, he had to tumble its opening segment in which he showed a scene from the Ali McGraw/Ryan O’Neal film, ‘Love Story’, where McGraw’s character says that she is ‘going to Paris to gaze with Nadia Boulanger’ without offering an explanation as to who Boulanger was, evidence that Boulanger’s name was well enough known that a mass audience didn’t more than mention of her name.) There is also a reprint of a touching letter from Bernstein to Monsaingeon recounting his last visit with Mademoiselle fair before her death.

The focus of this documentary is musical entirely. There is no attempt to enlighten biographical details about Boulanger, in keeping with Mademoiselle’s wishes. This makes this relatively short documentary all the more densely packed with relevant examples of her style and philosophy of teaching.
For those involved in the work of Boulanger and needing some insight into her methods, this film is self-recommending.

I came to Nadia Boulanger via Dinu Lipatti, (Piano Concertos) her pupil and one of the most gifted, if short lived, piano players of the 20th century. Then, this being a film made by Bruno Monsaingeon, whom I met through Richter: The Enigma [Region 2], the decision to sight it came naturally.
The film is the first one made by Monsaingeon, in 1977, upon Ms. Boulanger’s 90th year of life. It is rather short and, as the author concedes, owes a lot in format and recount to the limitations of shooting film in the early ’70s–one could shoot continuously only for 11 minutes on 16mm film. One becomes so powerful more aware of the shortcomings by checking out Mademoiselle: Conversations With Nadia Boulanger.
Nadia Boulanger, comes by virtue of biography, with-in the generation(al) transition between two ages in the world of classical music; simpler effect, between the 19th and the 20th centuries, and their types of music, respectively. And, while strongly anchored in the classical canon, she’d preserve an commence gaze and mind towards the recent musical expressions of creators such as Schoenberg. In other words, Stravinsky might have chronologically been among the last composers whose creation she resonated with. At the same time, she had undertaken the contemplate of Schoenberg, with the conception that unusual musical grammars could, and ought to, have evolved.
All prior limitations of the production aside, the DVD is a trusty adore for the student/practitioner of most any craft. Indeed, coming from such a culture and time, Ms. Boulanger speaks a lot to what goes tainted today and how things can be fixed. On this latter point, for example, she was of the understanding that in addition to talent, culture and all the likes, it was critical to have character in order to succeed and excel. She’s also quoted as ’scornfully dismissing’ somebody in such terms: “You are letting yourself be ruled by technique.” So, those who esteem craft will likely be most contented by this DVD. As Paul Valery build it, “She ordains enthusiasm with discipline.”
At the highest level of analysis, it is enthralling how Ms. Boulanger would explain something simply by stating its quality of being so. Does this mean that she lived in a world of “everything goes? ” Far from it, her canon was too rigorous for that. In her have words, “As I gain God, I derive beauty, I get emotion. I also secure masterpieces.”
Igor Markevitch and Leonard Bernstein are also featured in this film, and there is a challenging last conversation between Bernstein and the dying Ms. Boulanger in the booklet that comes along. In fact, the booklet makes its enjoy contribution to the package, not the last being Monsaingeon’s candor in looking abet at his first creation of this genre.
And now, if you’d allow me, my maintain inquire for Ms. Boulanger would have been about her concept(s) on Jazz…
All in all, it’s not a 5-star package, but it comes cessation. Probably, the people late this production felt the same scheme when deciding to include herein Mozart’s “Prague” symphony, no 38, conducted by Igor Markevitch .
P.S. Especially for the American viewer, for a student perspective into Ms. Boulanger’s teaching, have a gawk at the first piece of the 2nd dvd Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts. Philip Glass makes it obvious why he chose to go and view with Nadia Boulanger, how she worked with her students, and how she helped him become a composer.
